Spring is finally here and we’re all itching to get outside and out of the house. Especially after this last year when we’ve all felt cooped up for so long. Before you drag out the lawn furniture, however, go take a good look at that lawn and yard to make sure its ready for another busy season.
Make sure the area is clear
This is the time to make sure that anything else you left out over the winter is out of the way so that you can give the area a good inspection. Clearing away any other items like planters or ornamental objects will also help you to see if you’ve worn down more of some areas than others.
Weeds
While weeds will not normally penetrate your turf, check any areas where there are seems or patches. After a wet winter, that spring sun may prompt a few to stick their heads up in those areas. Yank them out!
Clean up any debris
Twigs, leaves, small branches or any other winter debris should be removed and cleaned up – gently so as not to damage any turf. Make note of any seems or patches that might need repairing – that’s a fairly easy fix, so don’t panic.
Rinse or hose off the turf to remove any other visible dirt or marks and pay particular attention to areas where your pets frequent. If you notice any odor, you might want to wash it down with a water & vinegar mix.
Fluff it up
After a winter of rain and snow it’s only natural for your turf to take a bit of a beating. There are probably areas here and there that look a little more “flattened out” then others. These patches and spots are easily fluffed up. Use a broom or brush with soft bristles so as not to damage the turf. Metal rakes or tools can make accidental damage more possible. Make sure to check the spots where you may have left things sitting over the winter. The steady weight may also have caused a flattened spot or two.
