Synthetic Turf Maintenance Tips for Fall

August 27, 2019adminGMAX Testing, Synthetic TurfNo Comments

If you have taken the steps to invest in a synthetic turf lawn or field, you’ll also want to make sure it is cared for properly in order to maximize your investment. While synthetic grass requires less maintenance than natural, one of its main selling points, there are some important steps you can take to protect it, especially in the fall.

Remove the leaves

Even though the autumn leaves can’t directly damage your artificial lawn or field the way they can a natural lawn, you’ll still need to remove them as quickly as possible. Leaves cannot decompose on turf the same way they do on natural grass because there is not any soil to soak up the decomposing material. As the leaves rot on your turf, they can produce a smelly substance that can clog or damage your lawn’s drainage system.

To remove the leaves, you can vacuum them up or blow them away with a proper leaf management tool that uses air, as opposed to a metal surface. It is best to find a leaf blower that is designed to work with turf specifically to make sure your turf is protected. Be sure to set a schedule to remove the leaves throughout the autumn.

Keep it clean

In addition to removing the leaves, you’ll also want to clean your turf regularly – usually once per week, unless it has been rainy in your area. Simply spray the grass fibers with a water hose to remove any dust or other debris that has accumulated. Again, this is especially critical during the fall because of the leaf debris.

Not cleaning your turf regularly can result in a clogged or damaged drainage system – not to mention that it can ruin the aesthetic of your lawn.

Treat with weedicides

Even though the turf is artificial, weeds can still grow in and around it. Use weedicides to treat invasive growth on your artificial lawn or field. These should be applied during spring and fall, when weeds are most likely to sprout, and any time during the summer that you notice vegetative growth. The optimal weedicide to choose will depend on your turf as well as what is growing on your grass.
