You’re well aware of the benefits of your beautiful artificial turf lawn and proud of how much nicer your place looks than your neighbor’s in the winter. No bare patches, dried yellow spots, divots … mud. But as nice as your lawn looks, it’s a good idea to watch over it and provide a little care and caution to keep it looking its best throughout the season.
Let it snow
Snow really poses no harm to your artificial turf, so there is nothing to worry about there. You can just leave it and let the snow melt naturally just like you would with a regular lawn or garden. If you just don’t like seeing the snow on the turfed areas and you don’t want it to hang around waiting to melt, there are a few things you can do.
If there isn’t much snow on your turf or just patches here and there that annoy you, some warm water poured onto it will work just fine. If there is a broader area of coverage and you really want it gone, you can use one of the many snow-melt products on the market. These will work as well on artificial grass as it will on regular grass. To err on the side of caution however, it’s best not to overload the area with snow melt since it does contain a lot of sodium and you don’t want all the salt residue building up beneath your turf.
Shovel – but gently
If you really want to get rid of the snow faster, you can shovel it off of your turf. If you plan on doing this however, its important to use only a plastic shovel. Metal shovels are heavy duty and can be sharp – you do not want to risk tearing or creating a hole in your turf. Also, it’s a good idea to only remove the top layer of snow and leave some behind to melt naturally. This will make sure you don’t dig down too far and cause any accidental damage.
Don’t slip!
While your artificial turf is tough and built to withstand a lot, we all know how cold and unforgiving New England winters can be. All those cold winds and freezing temperatures could cause the fiber in your turf to become brittle and slippery. Although unlikely, you don’t want to take a fall on your own lawn!
